Yellowstone Cutthroat
The Yellowstone cutthroat trout, or Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri, is a subspecies of the cutthroat trout. Their native range is exclusive to upstream of Shoshone Falls on the Snake River, across the Continental Divide in Yellowstone Lake, and in the Yellowstone River. Being a prized game fish, anglers were devastated when flooding allowed Mackinaw (lake trout) to invade their ancestral home. The conservation effort is unprecedented, as many organizations have come together to restore the schools of glistening amber dorsal fins that once populated the Yellowstone headwaters. The Yellowstone cutthroat holds a special place in my heart, and it is up to all of us to support the protections of vulnerable species like these magnificent fish.
