Dime Bright Steelhead

from $3,400.00

The steelhead, or Salmo gairdneri, is genetically the same species as the coastal rainbow trout. Much like Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout have an instinctive urge to leave the fresh water for the ocean. When they do this, they lose all of the distinctive rainbow trout colors, and are indistinguishable from other pacific salmon forms except to the trained eye. They spend 3 years at sea, growing stronger and larger than any inland rainbow could. Eventually returning to the river they hatched in, these 10-20 pound monsters invade the river system every winter and summer. Unlike true salmon, they do not die after spawning, but instead return to the sea. Almost all of the northern pacific river systems in The United States were once home to huge schools of steelheads during the run, but they are considered threatened or endangered in all of their ancestral waters due to the introduction of dams. The steelhead is known to many coastal anglers as “the fish of 10,000 casts” because of their elusiveness.
