Ghosts of the West: Pronghorn
The Pronghorn Antelope, or Antilocapra americana, is a strange creature. Though often referred to as an antelope, it is not. Its closest living relative is the giraffe. In addition to this, it has some very strange evolutionary adaptations, especially for north America. The pronghorn is one of the fastest creatures on the planet. This is most likely a holdover trait from the most recent ice age, when there were many more species of large cat in North America. It is theorized that there was a cheetah analogue species; and that it was the pronghorn’s primary predator. The name of this series is meant to honor these majestic creatures and their relatives. Most of the time our interactions with them are only what they leave behind. Hoofprints, droppings, and beds are much more common sightings than the animal itself. They are all around us in the wilderness, but rarely seen. They are ghosts of the west
