Ghosts of the West: Bison
American Bison are some of the largest animals in North America. Symbolic of the wild west, herds of millions used to roam the great plains. The story is all too common. Researching the animals I create often leads me to a similar story. Abundance, until humanity stepped in. Bison were nearly hunted to extinction, and extermination efforts went on for more than 100 years. Today the populations are stable, but nowhere near what they once were. Conservation efforts continue to try to preserve them for future generations. The name of this series is meant to honor these majestic creatures and their relatives. Most of the time our interactions with them are only what they leave behind. Hoofprints, droppings, and beds are much more common sightings than the animal itself. They are all around us in the wilderness, but rarely seen. They are ghosts of the west. All pieces in the ‘Ghosts’ series are life size or slightly larger.
