Ghosts of the West: Wolf
The Grey Wolf, or Canus lupus, is the largest of the undomesticated canines. A social animal that often travels and hunts in packs. They are carnivorous, aided by their large canines for gripping and tearing flesh of their prey and breaking bone. Prey for the wolf is mostly comprised of ungulates in their geographical range, and sometimes livestock, as well as some carrion and scavenging of garbage. The average weight of a grey wolf is 88lbs, females will on average be 5-10 pounds lighter than males. Wide zygomatic arches and a tall sagittal crest on the skull of the grey wolf allow for a strong and wide muscle attachment for their powerful jaws. The name of this series is meant to honor these majestic creatures and their relatives. Most of the time our interactions with them are only what they leave behind. Pawprints, droppings, and old dens are much more common sightings than the animal itself. They are all around us in the wilderness, but rarely seen. They are ghosts of the west.
