Ghosts of the West: Bighorn
Bighorn Sheep, or Ovis canadensis, is a revered species of the Bovidae family native to North America. Named for the majestic horns, the rams often use them for sparring over females. I often see bighorns on fishing trips. They are incredibly adept climbers and can easily scale the high canyon walls of many river valleys. They were nearly hunted to extinction in the early 1900s, but now have a robust population spanning the entire length of the Rockies, as well as much of the southwestern desert. The name of this series is meant to honor these majestic creatures and their relatives. Most of the time our interactions with them are only what they leave behind. Hoofprints, droppings, and beds are much more common sights than the animal itself. They are all around us in the wilderness, but rarely seen. They are ghosts of the west. All pieces in the ‘Ghosts’ series are life size or slightly bigger.
