Chinook (King) Salmon
The Chinook, King, Blackmouth, or Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha is the largest and most valuable member of the Pacific Salmon genus. Known for their impressive size, these kings of the sea spend years out in the open ocean gorging themselves on shrimp and squid. After 3 years at sea, they head toward their ancestral spawning rivers, and this is where most anglers encounter them. Through a marvel of biological navigation, they patrol the coast, looking for traces of their target stream’s water. Bottlenecked in the river, they are harvested in great numbers for their prized meat. Upon entering fresh water, they soon begin to die. Their life cycle ends with the spawn, where the next generation then heads toward the sea. Life revolves around the salmon run wherever it happens. Bears, birds, and people all count on the bounty that is brought inland by these marvelous creatures.
