Arctic Char
The Arctic Char, or Salvelinus Alpinus, is a mysterious member of the salmonid family. Seen by few, and caught by fewer, it haunts the waters of the northern reaches of the continent. They spend their winters in the arctic sea hunting shrimp and small fish. During the summer, the voyage up the many north flowing rivers to the Brooks Mountain Range where they spawn in the fall. This fish lives in a world of extremes. 6 months of darkness, and 6 months of light are the world these fish know. Barren stretches of permafrost and wind-whipped landscapes dotted with caribou surround the water they live in. Arctic char call to me like few fish do. They often seem like unicorns, unattainable to the majority of the world. I dream of these landscapes, and the chance at spending time with this marvelous animal in person.
