Bonefish
The Bonefish, or Albula Vulpes, is the type species that includes 9 separate but closely related sub-species. Once thought to be a single species and very widespread, it has been discovered that each type of bonefish has a slightly different genetic makeup even though they appear nearly identical. Bonefish are very specialized and efficient predators. The unique, downturned jaw and shovel like snout are perfectly adapted to rooting their favorite prey out of the sand. Following the tides, bonefish come in the shallow waters of tidal and salt flats, to hunt crabs, mollusks, shrimp, fry, and other invertebrates. Their power makes them a favorite target for anglers. It is not uncommon for a bonefish to take you to your backing even if it is less than 20”. As juveniles they are a schooling species and are usually solitary or in pair when fully grown. While bone fishing, it’s wise to watch for feeding stingrays. Bonefish often follow them, taking advantage of the prey that the stingray disturbs.
