Atlantic Tarpon
The Atlantic Tarpon, or Megalops atlanticus, is one of only two species in the genus Megalops. Aptly named, the Atlantic Tarpon is truly a hyper predator of enormous proportions. Incredibly athletic, they are known to aggressively chase down their prey in both open water and on the outskirts of mangroves. Typically feeding in mid water, the adults are strictly carnivorous. Anglers know them best for their explosive breaches when hooked, and the multiple 100+ yard runs that are common when hooked. Developing this piece was a more intensive process than I’ve ever done before. Between scales, the iconic eye, and the sheer size of these fish were all difficult technical challenges to overcome. Even though the tarpon series is the largest group of pieces I’ve attempted, their living counterparts grow much larger. Healthy adults frequently reach 7 feet in length, and upwards of 250 pounds.
